The region’s illiteracy rate in 2001 was 18.2%, double the national average (9%). The region has, nonetheless, been improving, lowering that rate from 42% in 1950 to 18.2% in 2001.
In relation to the level of schooling achieved by the majority of the regional population, more than 50% of the population had completed the 2nd and 3rd stages of basic education (lower secondary education), except in Mogadouro and Sabugal where the majority of the population had only completed the 1st stage (primary schooling) of basic education.
Less than 10% of the region’s resident population has completed higher and further education, except for Almeida (12%), Pinhel (15%), Torre de Moncorvo (11%), Trancoso (10%) and Vila Nova de Foz Côa (11%).
