As regards the UAA, the area devoted to arable land for temporary crops decreased from 50% to a share of 37% in 1999. Permanent crops recorded a slight fall in the area occupied, falling from 38% to 32%. The area set aside for permanent grazing and pasture significantly increased, growing from 12% in 1970 to 31% in 1999, in harmony with the growth of livestock farming.
